If you have been toying with the idea of replacing your front door's locking system, you should consider a keyless lock. Having to carry keys around can become a security risk as you could either misplace them or have them stolen from you. With a keyless lock, you do not have to worry about this as only authorized individuals that have the password can gain entry into the home. Additionally, since keyless locks are digital, you also do not have to worry about mechanical problems with your locking system that could led to you being locked out of your home. You could enlist the services of a locksmith to install this lock for your or you could opt to buy the lockset and do it yourself. Here are the steps to DIY installation of a keyless locking system.

Requirements

  • A keyless lockset
  • A screw driver
  • A pencil
  • A drill and drill bits
  • A chisel

Take out the old lock system

The first step would be to remove the hardware of your previous locking system. If you had purchased a keyless lockset that comes with a doorknob and a lock, then you should remove both the deadbolt as well as the doorknob of your former locking system. However, your new system comprises only the lockset, then you do not have to worry about your doorknob. Taking out the hardware can easily be done using the screw driver.

Position the new keyless lockset

The next step to installing your keyless lockset would be determining your preferred positioning for its hardware. These locksets typically come with a template. Take this and align it with the door so that you can establish the area you would like it installed. Use your pencil to outline the lockset and to mark the areas where the screws will be inserted. Once you have this position marked out, it is prudent to do the same on the other side of the door. Use your chisel to mortise the spot for the other side, which can help you ensure that both positions are flush without any variance.

Attach the keypad of the keyless lockset

To attach the keypad of the lockset, start of by screwing on the back-plate onto the position that you had marked for the keyless lockset. Once this is in place, ensure the keypad cable is out of the way before attaching the front-plate of the keypad onto it. Once the keyless lockset is in place, ensure everything is in flush positioning before tightening the screws. Conclude by keying in your new password for your door.

Remember to contact a locksmith if you need assistance.
